April Minutes

It was good to see some stalwarts and a number of new members meet the challenge of being at Fingal Head at 5:15am for our last outing. Sadly, the pre-dawn light did not give us the hoped for spectacular sunrise, but I am sure everyone managed to get some good shots from the headland and the beach. The sea was very rough with a heavy swell running, so it was not safe to venture near the Causeway. However, I am sure there were some good shots captured of the waves. Better sunrise luck next time.

The weather has been playing havoc with our outings and it was disappointing to learn the night before that the Rathdowney Festival last Sunday was cancelled. There is no indication whether this will be re-scheduled for another time.

Our practical nights have been creating a lot of interest and last month was no exception. The room was full of photographers eager to capture some still life images. Thanks to David, Brian, Anthony, Gunnar and Phill for providing the props and the lighting.

COLORMUNKI

An arrangement has been made for all clubs (and members) to be able to purchase the ColorMunki Photo Colour calibration system at 10% discount when purchased from Photo Continental Brisbane. The license has been opened so the system is able to be used by any member of the club for their personal use as well. You can get specs and a movie demonstration at http://www.photo-i.co.uk/Colour%20Management/munki/munki.html This offer remains valid till 30th June 2009. Just mention that you are a member of PSQ, or refer to Jason Buck at Photo Continental, when you purchase.

ANNUAL PSQ PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

There is not a lot of time before our entries have to be submitted for this competition. Closing date is 5pm Friday 15 May. The Committee plans to concentrate on large prints and DPI . We will accept slides if anyone wishes to enter them. Mandatory mount size for large prints is 16” x 20” or 400mm x 500mm, plus the smaller 11” x 14” mount size. There is no restriction on the size of the print opening. DPI are 1024 x 768 at 72 ppi, sRGB. Entries need to be submitted on the practical night in April, as the selection will take place on 2 May. Subjects are: People, Social Documentary, Pictorial and Creative. We try to include as many members as possible in the selection process, but we can only submit two entries in each of four subjects in Mono Prints, Colour Prints, DPI and Slides. If you would like more information,

ROBINA EXHIBITION

This is also a good time to start thinking about the images you would like to enter in our annual exhibition at Robina. More details will be forthcoming, but we hope to have a theme section as well as open. The exhibition will be from 1 – 14 July. The exhibition can be successful only if members support it. Entries to be submitted by 25 June (practical night), or they can be brought to the framing working bee on Saturday 27 June. Location to be advised. Only two mount sizes will be accepted as they have to fit the Society’s frames. Large 400mm x 500mm and small 11” x 14”.

NOTICE BOARD

The Society has acquired a very “expensive” notice board (thanks Brian!) which will be used for pamphlets and notices that may be of interest to members. Please check it out. This month there will be notices about a desert photography trip, the 2009 ANZANG Photography Competition (a former member won last year); information from Ipswich Show Society, notice of Josephine Ulrick & Win Schubert Photography Award, and other bits and pieces.
Steve Parish Books. The discount offer is valid to 30 April. Don’t forget to place your order. See Rhonda to make payment.

A warm welcome to the following new members: Bill Bloomfield, Cathy & Kevin Nelson, Dianne Barnett and Barry Gillick.

The next outing is Queen Mary Falls on 26 April.
