Exposure at April Prac Night
A big turn out nearing 50 attended the practical night for April. This must be one of the biggest prac night turn outs in years. Well done to Jeff and team for doing something right!! Lock in that formula!!
There are some links I’d like to give you from the talk.
1, First of all, the Luminous Landscape website that some already knew about but for those who don’t, click here.
2. Within the luminous landscape site was an article on Ansel Adams’s Zone System entitled A Simplified Zone System. Click here for the direct link. This article contains the table of descriptions of the various zones. Although it was written about film, most of it is still relevant in the digital age.
3. Another interesting article from the same website called Understanding Exposure. Click here to go directly to it or find it in the Understanding series of articles.
By the way, if you are inspired by what you see on this website, the club has subscribed to a number of the DVD Journals. See Alwyn Milligan, the Librarian, about borrowing a copy.
Today is RAW day. If you don’t start shooting RAW after last night’s maths exercise, then I don’t know what it will take to cause the shift.
Enjoy levels by the thousand,
David Magahy

P.S. I hope to expand the members gallery greatly by the end of the day with thanks to Rhonda Ramage who has kindly renamed all the images from the comps over the past 4 months.
Annual PSQ Competition
We would like to collect entries next Thursday night (23rd April) – or we can receive them at anytime up to 2nd May - for the selection of our club entry to be held on Saturday morning, 2nd May.
Remember that there are 4 sections – Pictorial, People, Social Documentary and Creative.
Entries can be either Prints or Projected Images (including slides).
Prints can be either Monochrome or Colour but need to be either in 16”x20” or 11”x14” mounts (see below for details).
Please do not think for a moment that you have to be in A Grade to enter!
GCPS currently has a number of very talented and creative newer members in B and AB Grades who are presenting some excellent quality fresh and very creative works.
It will only be a matter of time for a number of our newer members to acquire the necessary number of awards and pick up a bit more experience along the way and we will be seeing them competing in A Grade.
Some of these members are leading the way in GCPS with folios of their work on Red Bubble and Flickr and participating in the APS On-Line folios where their work is critiqued by some very experienced photographers and where they have the opportunity to similarly critique the work of these photographers. Indeed, they are more pro-active with their photography than some of our longer-established A-Grade members (myself included)!
So please, have a look though your work and consider getting a few of your images together to submit for selection for the GCPS entry into the PSQ Annual Photographic Competition.
We generally do quite well as a club. Most years we win a section or two in the PSQ Competition and currently hold the PSQ 5”x7” Colour Prints Perpetual Trophy (which has ceased as of 2009).
Thanks for your assistance with this

Environmental Photo Competition
CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) runs the Environmental Photographer of the Year, which is one of the fastest growing photographic competitions in the world. In 2008 we received over 1,400 entries from over 40 countries –we are hoping to increase this in the 2009 competition.
This is a serious competition that seeks to celebrate photographers who use their ability to raise awareness of environmental and social issues. It is open to all professional and amateur international photographers of any ages. This year’s categories are Changing Climates; A World of Difference; Quality of Life; The Natural World; and the Young Environmental Photographer of the Year (Under 21). EPOTY encourages entries that are contemporary, creative, experimental, resonant, original and beautiful.
The judging panel is made up of some of the most respected environmental photographers in the industry, including Gary Braasch, winner of the Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography, as well as senior environmentalists. Individual pieces of work will be judged on impact, creativity, composition, originality and technical abilities. Winners receive cash prizes, and all winning and highly commended entries are displayed in the international Environmental Photographer of the Year exhibitions. Copyright is retained by the photographer (see terms and conditions at www.ciwem.org/arts/photographer).
The competition is open until 5pm on 31st July 2009.
If you have any questions or require more information, please do contact me.
Many thanks and best wishes,

April Minutes
The weather has been playing havoc with our outings and it was disappointing to learn the night before that the Rathdowney Festival last Sunday was cancelled. There is no indication whether this will be re-scheduled for another time.
Our practical nights have been creating a lot of interest and last month was no exception. The room was full of photographers eager to capture some still life images. Thanks to David, Brian, Anthony, Gunnar and Phill for providing the props and the lighting.
COLORMUNKI
An arrangement has been made for all clubs (and members) to be able to purchase the ColorMunki Photo Colour calibration system at 10% discount when purchased from Photo Continental Brisbane. The license has been opened so the system is able to be used by any member of the club for their personal use as well. You can get specs and a movie demonstration at http://www.photo-i.co.uk/Colour%20Management/munki/munki.html This offer remains valid till 30th June 2009. Just mention that you are a member of PSQ, or refer to Jason Buck at Photo Continental, when you purchase.
ANNUAL PSQ PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION
There is not a lot of time before our entries have to be submitted for this competition. Closing date is 5pm Friday 15 May. The Committee plans to concentrate on large prints and DPI . We will accept slides if anyone wishes to enter them. Mandatory mount size for large prints is 16” x 20” or 400mm x 500mm, plus the smaller 11” x 14” mount size. There is no restriction on the size of the print opening. DPI are 1024 x 768 at 72 ppi, sRGB. Entries need to be submitted on the practical night in April, as the selection will take place on 2 May. Subjects are: People, Social Documentary, Pictorial and Creative. We try to include as many members as possible in the selection process, but we can only submit two entries in each of four subjects in Mono Prints, Colour Prints, DPI and Slides. If you would like more information, click here to download the pdf of all the specs.
ROBINA EXHIBITION
This is also a good time to start thinking about the images you would like to enter in our annual exhibition at Robina. More details will be forthcoming, but we hope to have a theme section as well as open. The exhibition will be from 1 – 14 July. The exhibition can be successful only if members support it. Entries to be submitted by 25 June (practical night), or they can be brought to the framing working bee on Saturday 27 June. Location to be advised. Only two mount sizes will be accepted as they have to fit the Society’s frames. Large 400mm x 500mm and small 11” x 14”.
NOTICE BOARD
The Society has acquired a very “expensive” notice board (thanks Brian!) which will be used for pamphlets and notices that may be of interest to members. Please check it out. This month there will be notices about a desert photography trip, the 2009 ANZANG Photography Competition (a former member won last year); information from Ipswich Show Society, notice of Josephine Ulrick & Win Schubert Photography Award, and other bits and pieces.
Steve Parish Books. The discount offer is valid to 30 April. Don’t forget to place your order. See Rhonda to make payment.
A warm welcome to the following new members: Bill Bloomfield, Cathy & Kevin Nelson, Dianne Barnett and Barry Gillick.
The next outing is Queen Mary Falls on 26 April.
