Dec Minutes
Firstly, the Management Committee would like to wish all members a safe and happy festive season.
This has been a busy year, and we hope to be able to provide much of interest for members in the coming year. Our first meeting welcomed new committee members, Maryanne, Joanne and Jenny, and we are sure they will have much to contribute.
We are delighted to welcome Graham McAuslane as the new Editor of the “In Focus” Newsletter. Please remember to send him any articles of interest, or jottings which you think will be of interest to other members. The Newsletter won’t survive unless Graham receives material for it. We are hoping to circulate this to members as a pdf. file and some will be printed for distribution to Ted’s, Photo Planet, TDI etc. We are also hoping to have the Newsletter available on the website.
For some time now the committee has been looking at ideas for a new logo and letterhead for the Society which more clearly depicts what we are about. We are happy to announce that we will be holding a competition for the best logo, and a substantial prize is being offered for the winning idea. What we require is a clear, uncluttered graphic to represent the Society, suitable for reverse printing if required, and suitable for different applications. The closing date is the end of January. This will give you time to put your thinking caps on over the Christmas/New Year break!
EOY: Ken has emailed information on how you need to deal with your entries for the End of Year Competition. Please be sure to adhere to the instructions as it will mean the difference between an event that runs smoothly and one that doesn’t. Also, in keeping with the festive time of year, we ask that members bring a small plate to share at supper.
Early in the New Year we will be looking for entries for the competition with the Latow Guild in Canada. More about this in the new year. Also, if you want to be part of the Snapshot of Earth – 3pm NZ time 7 March 2010. Remember to make a diary note.
The Committee have been busy planning the outings and practical nights for the coming year. As soon as some confirmations have been received, members will be advised. We are happy to have Belinda and Kate involved in the organization of the outings. Don’t forget – if you have a suggestion for an outing or a practical night, please contact a member of the Committee.
Unfortunately, I was not at the BBQ, but I understand from various members that this was a most enjoyable day, with lots of interaction between members. This year we are planning to bring more flexibility to the outings, rather than confining them to the last Sunday of the month. Several interesting events occur which are not on the last Sunday, and it would be good to have the flexibility to attend them.
Our January practical night will be guest speaker Nick Rains from Brisbane who will deliver a presentation on landscape photography. This should be a good night.
We are hoping to have raffles at coming meetings. $2 per ticket is the amount suggested. More on this soon.
A warm welcome is extended to new members Janet Lawrence, Belinda Moo and Dawn Sajn. Please make them feel ‘at home’ and offer any advice or assistance you can.
Remember January is Nature. Bring print entries to the EOY night. Digital entries as per Ken’s instructions.
Happy Holidays
Vi Wilson, Secretary
Nov Minutes
The Society outing on 25 October in Brisbane proved to be an enjoyable day, and it was good to have some of our very new members attending. We lost one of our party for a while, but then he popped up again!! Had something to do with trains not waiting!
Don’t forget those Membership renewals. Your name will drop off the emailing list at the end of November if you are not financial. Remember to complete your Renewal of Membership form, and pay the treasurer in person, or mail your renewal to P.O. Box 2363, Southport, Q4215.
November Outing: The sign-on forms for this function will be at the rooms for the next two nights. Do come along and enjoy a relaxed get-together on Sunday 29 November at 8.00am. The location is the park on Duringan Street. Currumbin. GCPS is providing a BBQ breakfast.
We have received advice that at 3.00pm NZ time (12 noon our time) on 7 March 2010 a New Zealand group is organizing a “Snapshot of Earth”. If you would like to be part of this event, please see the attached Word document for details. Jeff will be reminding members about this over the next couple of months.
Our Society has been selected by Latow Guild of Canada, to participate in a Photography Challenge. We have agreed to be involved and Ken will be contacting members in the new year with details. Meanwhile, you might like to have a look at their website http://latow.tripod.com/
Do contribute to the blog which David set up for Places of Interest. It is always a challenge to find places of interest, so if you have suggestions I am sure they would be greatly appreciated.
AGM – 26 November. We are still waiting for the flood of nominations for the positions which have to be filled Please think seriously about becoming involved in your Society, by offering your thoughts, ideas and expertise.
Our congratulations to Diane Murphy and Helga Hague – both promoted to AB Grade, and Michi Brooks – promoted to A Grade as of January 2010. We look forward to seeing more excellent work from these members.
We would like to welcome the following new members: Leanne Ronalds, Joanne Smith, Craig Capper and Charles Knight, as well as Colin Bucknall and Karoly Nemeskeri who missed being acknowledged here last month. Please make them welcome
If any member has business contacts who might be willing to offer suitable lucky door prizes, please see a member of the committee.
Best wishes

Extraordinary General meeting
GOLD COAST PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY, INC
EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING
22 OCTOBER 2009, HELD AT KUSTOM CAR CLUB ROOMS MUDGERRABA
7.30pm
A G E N D A
WELCOME
PURPOSE OF THE MEETING:
1. To consider motions presented by members for changes to current competition rules.
The Motions are:
i. That members be permitted to enter all four images in any one section,
i.e. all in Open Colour or all in DPI etc. (Kathy Scallan)
ii. That 3 points be awarded for an Honour and 1 point for a Merit instead of
1 ½ points for an Honour and 1 point for a Merit (Lorraine Jones)
iii. That members be awarded a Certificate when they progress from one grade
to the next (Lorraine Jones)
iv. That, in addition to the current EOY competition for images which have received Merits or Honours during the year, there be a separate EOY competition where members who have not received an award during the year can enter one print or DPI image and have the judges choose 1st, 2nd and 3rd from each grade, or from all grades combined. (Lorraine Jones)
2. To establish whether members are agreeable to a change of meeting night, which may assist the committee in finding suitable premises with a larger capacity than at present

Sept Minutes
A big thank you to Ken Sparrow who put a lot of time and effort into planning the rosters for the Gold Coast Show. It was good to see lots of new faces helping out. Generally the layout for displaying the photos was much better this year. Ken has already sent out a list of winners and place getters.
Thanks also to Kathie Scallan for organizing the September outing to Springbrook. This should be a really lovely day in beautiful surroundings. The sign on form will be at the two next meetings.
The Society outing on 25 October will be a Street/City/Urbanscape in Brisbane. Our last effort was somewhat de-railed (sorry!) because of track work on the line. Hopefully this attempt will be more successful. First departure time will be from Robina at 7.56am – slightly later at other stations. More details in early October.
The Extraordinary General Meeting to decide the competition rules (nothing to do with Constitution) for 2010 will be held on 22 October. If you would like to suggest any changes, please forward your suggestions to me via email with a copy to Ken, by 1 October. Any suggestions received after this date will be too late for consideration. Please note: I will not be able to reply to your emails until after 29 September. I will be away.
Set subjects for PSQ and the Interclub Digital Projected Images Competition are:
PSQ – Streetscapes, Nature, People as in Photo Travel and Creative.
Interclub – Land/Sea/Urbanscapes, Nature, Portrait, Abandoned, Photo for a Cookbook, Emotions and Open for B and A/B Grade.
The GCPS set subjects have not yet been determined. If you would like to make set subject suggestions, please email them to Ken.
In the recent Interclub Competition GCPS were placed second (407 points) behind Peninsula (409 points). Redland Bay were third on 399 points. This was a very good effort and thanks are due to Lorraine, Ken and David for making a successful selection of images.
Membership renewals fall due on 1 October. Any member who is unfinancial at the end of November, will be considered ‘lapsed’ and will no longer receive Society information. They will also not be able to vote at the AGM. To aid record keeping, members will be asked to complete a Membership Renewal form. Ken will be sending this out in the next few days (thanks Ken!). We look forward to having you renew your membership.
Nomination forms will be available in the coming weeks. Apart from committee positions, there are a number of other positions to be filled, e.g. Supper Person, Newsletter Editor, Outings Coordinator. Please think about offering your support. These tasks are not onerous and it spreads the work load of the few who do support the Society.
Best wishes

Aug Minutes
While Vi is away I am sitting in for her as Acting Secretary so here is the news.
New Members: On Monday Night at the Management Committee Meeting membership applications were ratified for Peter and Glynis Diamond and Stephen McKillop-Davies. Welcome to GCPS.l
I gather that the “Hunt and Shoot” and BBQ at Cascade Gardens at the end of July was well attended and that it was a good day. Now a few more people need to let Jeff have their photos so that he can pick a winner.
Also I was told that the Practical Night on Studio Portrait Lighting by David Magahy was also well attended with plenty of interest. I gather that Jeff and David are contemplating a workshop to explore these techniques further. I hope that you all found our lovely model Yurika a delight to work with. Yurika was one of the models that we had for our outdoor photo shoots when we ran the PSQ Annual Convention in 2006 at Bond Uni.
Selection of our entry for the 2009 Interclub Projected Images Competition has been completed. As always it was a difficult task trying to balance out choosing strong entries against sharing the opportunities to be selected around as much as we could. Seven Categories with just 3 entries in each.
Entries were chosen from 12 members. Hopefully we will be able to show the final selection at one of our upcoming meetings. The actual competition is on Saturday 29th August from 9:30am in the Barry Jones Auditorium, Ipswich Library Complex, cnr South and East Streets, Ipswich. Map Reference 2009 UBD Map 213 Ref: E16 $3 entry.
Unfortunately this is the same Saturday as the Gold Coast Show but, if you are not involved in the GCS on the Saturday and are thinking of going then let me know as we have been asked to advise the organisers for their seating and catering arrangements.
A few congratulations are in order this month:
Kathy Scallan is moving back to Advanced (A) Grade after her phenomenal run of awards in Intermediate (AB) Grade this year. Also, Patricia Mita and Maryanne Souter have both received the necessary 8 awards to qualify to move from Beginners (B) Grade to Intermediate (AB) Grade. Several other members are also getting close to the magical 8 awards..
The PSQ AGM - Open Meeting is on Sunday 9 August at 10am in the Chermside Library, Hamilton Street. Nomination forms are available from me.
August Competition Night (13tg Aug) (Open Subject, Impact Judging of prints). The judge is Barry Mason from Lennox Head, an FCC (NSW) Judge. Remember that your prints can be any size. The digital entries will be pre-judged as usual. Also bring in your entries for the September competition.
August Practical Night (27th Aug) will centre around a presentation by Doug and Jean Moulin, highly respected photographers from Aukland, NZ. If time permits Jeff will be talking about the wonderful things that you can do with the Liquify Tool in Photoshop.
August Outing – Sunday 30th Aug will be the Gold Coast Show.
Gold Coast Show. I am still looking for a few more volunteers for the GCPS Roster in the Visual Arts Pavillion. Mainly on Friday afternoon (28th Aug, 1p – 5p) and on the afternoon of Sunday 23rd Aug – the “Bring-In” day – from say 12:00 to 3:30.pm That will be when we hang the entries.
That’s about it for this month. Anything else will be covered by email as the need arises.

July Minutes
Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who has been, and still is, involved with the Robina Exhibition. If you have not been to see it, you are missing out on a lovely display of members’ work. Cr Jan Grew and Ray Richardson were faced with the unenviable task of choosing winners for the Acquisition “Iconic GC” and Open Sections. Patricia Mita’s face would have made a classic photo when she learned she was the winner of the Acquisition Section, and I was extremely happy to have my “Kohekohe Church” chosen in the Open Section. Sue Black (Acquisition) and Ken Sparrow (Open) received Highly Commendeds for their lovely images.
July outing is a Hunt and Shoot at Cascade Gardens, followed by a BBQ, so come along for an enjoyable outing. Bring your camera gear and lots of enthusiasm.
Remember the Gold Coast Show is fast approaching and the closing date for entry forms is 3 August. Prints do not have to be delivered until Sunday 23 August. Show schedules will be available on Thursday night.
Practical night this month has been changed to accommodate guest speakers in August. Jeff will now have the Studio Lighting in July, so bring along your cameras and see how it is done.If you are having problems with any aspect of your photography talk to one of the more experienced members in the club. They will be more than happy to help you. Don’t forget to bring your camera manual.
The PSQ AGM - Open Meeting is on Sunday 9 August at 10am in the Chermside Library, Hamilton Street. Nomination forms are available from me.
The Interclub Digital Projected Images Competition will be held Saturday 29 August 2009 Registration from 9.30am. The venue is the Barry Jones Auditorium, Ipswich Library Complex, cnr South and East Streets, Ipswich. Map Reference 2009 UBD Map 213 Ref: E16. $3 entry. A selection of digital images will be chosen this Saturday for our entry in this competition.
That’s it for this month.

June Minutes
The change of time for last Sunday’s outing was opportune. Did you see all those dark clouds rolling in late in the afternoon?!! Fourteen keen photographers ended up at the beach near Q1 for the dawn shoot. The ubiquitous low grey clouds were there on the horizon, but there was still some lovely light, and the tide was low which meant it was possible to get some beautiful reflections in the sand. There were some interesting locations near Q1 and some great architectural shots of iconic buildings once we were at Circle on Cavill. The coffee was good too! There should be some great images for our Robina Exhibition. Sincere thanks to everyone who supported this outing.
MORE CHANGES
Since we have now had two dawn shoots, the committee have decided to have an educational shoot at Rosser Park commencing at 8.00am on Sunday 28 June. Meet at the pergola near the scented garden. This will be a good opportunity for new members to get familiar with their cameras in very pleasant surroundings.
The other change is for the July outing. Instead of the race track (which presented problems for our members who have to work, as well as sunrise timing issues) we will now meet at the Cascade Gardens for another educational shoot followed by a BBQ provided by GCPS. Meeting time to be confirmed.
Thanks to Jeff, Alwyn, Phill, Kathie, Rhonda, Patricia, Laura, Terry, Kevin, Jenny, Brian and Ken for volunteering to help with the framing of the prints for Robina on Saturday 27 June at 9.00am at KOA Rooms. I will be there too! Bring some clean old towels. If you can’t get to a meeting before then, bring your prints on the Saturday morning. I will be sending an entry form as an attachment for members who did not get one last Thursday. We will need some volunteers to collect the boxes of frames from David on Wednesday 23 June at 9.00am and take them to KOA rooms. See me or Jeff at the next meeting.
DIGITAL INTERCLUB COMPETITION
This year the host club is Ipswich and the competition will be held in the Barry Jones Auditorium, Ipswich Library Complex, cnr South and East Streets, Ipswich on Saturday 29th August, 2009 at 10:00am. Registration from 9:30am. The subjects for this competition are: People/Portrait, Nature, ‘Scapes, Music, Occupations, Night Scenes. We have covered all but one of these subjects in our monthly competitions over the past 12 months. If you have additional images you would like considered for selection – especially images that were originally entered as a print but could be entered as a DPI - please send them to Ken. Size should be 1024 x 768 sRGB colour. There is a specific file naming format and Ken will be forwarding details to members shortly. There is an Open Section exclusively for B and AB grade members.
We extend a very warm welcome to the following new members: Diane Murphy, Glyn Evans, Jenny Evans, Winston Churchill, and former member Neil Dunn. We are sorry to lose as a member Angelo Minisini who has re-located to Brisbane.
If any of our members have graphic art skills, could they please contact our president Jeff Hutchison by email
There are quite a few interesting events coming up. Thunder Cats at The Spit (opposite Seaworld) this weekend; PSQ conference at Caboolture... a number of members are going up for Saturday only; Wintersun to 8 June at Coolangatta; Round Mountain Jet Boats at Pottsville?, Beaudesert Country and Horse Festival 5 – 14 June, and Canungra Rodeo 27 June to name a few.
Regards
Vi Wilson, Secretary
May Minutes
Firstly, a huge thank you to David Magahy for the many hours he invested in getting the Members Gallery on the web site up and running. Members will be responsible for uploading their own images. Images for the web site should be prepared as follows:
720 ppi on the longest side at 72 ppi; save as quality 3; sRGB colour space. Files larger than this take too long to view. If you wish to upload images you will need to register by following the link at the Members Gallery page, then clicking the Register link, filling in your email address and your choice of password and a user name of your choice. The gallery administrator will then activate your account and you can add photos, edit existing ones or delete them as often as you like. Many albums have already been created but we can create more. There is plenty of disk space available.
The PSQ selections have been completed. It was a difficult task balancing the quality of our entry, with as wide a representation of members as possible. Due to the fact that we could only enter two images in each subject in each section, a lot of lovely images had to be left out. We were rather disappointed by the response from members for this competition, but sincerely thank those who did present images for consideration. Ken will be circulating the final list in the next day or two.
May Practical Night – 28 May: Cutting mat boards, converting colour images to mono, and perhaps a presentation on photographic courses from one of our members
Robina Exhibition 1 – 14 July 2009: This is a great opportunity for members to display their work in a public environment. Please think about making some images available. Two mat sizes only – 400mm x 500mm or 355mm x 280mm. Mats larger or smaller than this will not fit in the Society’s frames. Prints can be brought to the June Practical night, or to the working bee on Saturday 27 June at KOA rooms commencing at 9.00am.
We need volunteers to help with cleaning the frames and inserting the prints on Saturday 27 June 9.00am
We need volunteers to help collect the boxes of prints from KOA at 9.00am on 1 July and to hang the exhibit at Robina Art Gallery
We need volunteer/volunteers to arrange drinks and a few nibbles for the opening on 1 July at 7.00pm. Cr Jan Grew will open the exhibition
We need volunteers to take down the exhibition on Tuesday 14 July
We need volunteers to man the exhibition between 2 July and 14 July (3-hr blocks)
We need your prints! There is an Acquisition prize of $100 for the best image representing “Iconic GC” and a $50 prize for the winning image in the Open Section. Work by members in any grade is welcome.
Forms will be available at all meetings between now and 1 July. Please offer your help to the Committee.
Joint Weekend 9 – 11 October 2009, Midginbil Hill Farm Stay, NSW: This weekend outing has been around for quite a long time. Originally mutual friends in Queensland Camera Group and GCPS arranged these at various locations, and latterly were joined by the RETRO group. Many of the members in GCPS who attended these weekends no longer participate, or have left, and the question has been raised as to whether this weekend is of interest to our newer members.
Because there are some significant financial implications for GCPS, Jeff will be asking members at the next competition night for committed expressions of interest. If there is insufficient interest we may have to reconsider our position.
Queen Mary Falls: This proved to be a popular outing and Ken has already circulated a detailed report of our adventures. We look forward to seeing some award winning images from the day.
The next outing is a sunset shoot on 31 May. A location has not yet been determined but if you have some suggestions, please contact a member of the committee. We would welcome your input.
Vi Wilson,
Secretary
April Minutes
The weather has been playing havoc with our outings and it was disappointing to learn the night before that the Rathdowney Festival last Sunday was cancelled. There is no indication whether this will be re-scheduled for another time.
Our practical nights have been creating a lot of interest and last month was no exception. The room was full of photographers eager to capture some still life images. Thanks to David, Brian, Anthony, Gunnar and Phill for providing the props and the lighting.
COLORMUNKI
An arrangement has been made for all clubs (and members) to be able to purchase the ColorMunki Photo Colour calibration system at 10% discount when purchased from Photo Continental Brisbane. The license has been opened so the system is able to be used by any member of the club for their personal use as well. You can get specs and a movie demonstration at http://www.photo-i.co.uk/Colour%20Management/munki/munki.html This offer remains valid till 30th June 2009. Just mention that you are a member of PSQ, or refer to Jason Buck at Photo Continental, when you purchase.
ANNUAL PSQ PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION
There is not a lot of time before our entries have to be submitted for this competition. Closing date is 5pm Friday 15 May. The Committee plans to concentrate on large prints and DPI . We will accept slides if anyone wishes to enter them. Mandatory mount size for large prints is 16” x 20” or 400mm x 500mm, plus the smaller 11” x 14” mount size. There is no restriction on the size of the print opening. DPI are 1024 x 768 at 72 ppi, sRGB. Entries need to be submitted on the practical night in April, as the selection will take place on 2 May. Subjects are: People, Social Documentary, Pictorial and Creative. We try to include as many members as possible in the selection process, but we can only submit two entries in each of four subjects in Mono Prints, Colour Prints, DPI and Slides. If you would like more information, click here to download the pdf of all the specs.
ROBINA EXHIBITION
This is also a good time to start thinking about the images you would like to enter in our annual exhibition at Robina. More details will be forthcoming, but we hope to have a theme section as well as open. The exhibition will be from 1 – 14 July. The exhibition can be successful only if members support it. Entries to be submitted by 25 June (practical night), or they can be brought to the framing working bee on Saturday 27 June. Location to be advised. Only two mount sizes will be accepted as they have to fit the Society’s frames. Large 400mm x 500mm and small 11” x 14”.
NOTICE BOARD
The Society has acquired a very “expensive” notice board (thanks Brian!) which will be used for pamphlets and notices that may be of interest to members. Please check it out. This month there will be notices about a desert photography trip, the 2009 ANZANG Photography Competition (a former member won last year); information from Ipswich Show Society, notice of Josephine Ulrick & Win Schubert Photography Award, and other bits and pieces.
Steve Parish Books. The discount offer is valid to 30 April. Don’t forget to place your order. See Rhonda to make payment.
A warm welcome to the following new members: Bill Bloomfield, Cathy & Kevin Nelson, Dianne Barnett and Barry Gillick.
The next outing is Queen Mary Falls on 26 April.

March Minutes
Although I was not there to observe the change to the meeting format, I understand there have been some very favourable comments. Thanks to everyone who helped set up the room and clear up afterwards.
The last practical night caused a real hum, and it was good to see more experienced members helping new members. If the buzz was anything to go by, it was a worthwhile exercise, and we hope that newer members gained from it.
On a not so positive note, there was a very poor turn out for the Brisbane architecture outing on 22 February. As I understand it, only three members went to Brisbane, and it beggars the question “Why?” If you would like to offer some input, please contact a member of the committee.
March Outing. Light for photography is best in the early morning or the late afternoon (architecture was an exception). Light during the middle of the day is very flat and results in images that lack definition, mood and interest. We hope that members will support the outing to Fingal Head on 29 March. Meeting time is 7.00am Queensland time, in the Fingal Head car park near the little shop. No car pooling has been arranged, but it you would like to get together with other members to car pool, please make your own arrangements. Fingal Head is a very interesting location. The clipboards will be available at future club nights, and we ask you put your name on the list if you intend participating in these club events.

(I can’t go on a Sunday but went down on 2nd March. This pic was taken at 5.59am, sunrise was 5.40am. LIke the Gold Coast there was the ubiquitous cloud bank on the horizon so that lowers the odds of a clean sunrise. If the rocks are dry then it is easy climbing but if they are wet I’d tread carefully - David Magahy)
Some interesting background on the Fingal Lighthouse can be read at this link to the Tweed Heads Historical Society’s website
March Practical night. Jeff will be contacting members separately about the March practical night which will be Still Life.
ColorMunki Presentation. This is a final reminder about the ColorMunki Presentation at KOA rooms tomorrow Thursday 6 March at 7.30pm. A lot of very useful information is bound to be provided. Entry fee is $5 per person.
People’s Choice Award. Due to a lack of participation this award is being suspended for the time being. Generally it works better with Impact Judging.
PSQ Photographic Competition. It is time to start thinking about images (colour prints, mono prints, digital and slides) for the PSQ Competition. This year, a prize of $500 will be donated to the overall winning club, by the Photographic Society of Queensland. Your Society likes to submit a comprehensive entry, and looks to members for support. Subjects for this year are Creative, Social Documentary, People and Pictorial.
The Committee was very sorry to accept Lorraine Jones’ resignation as Treasurer. Lorraine was an involved and committed member and we will miss her input. We welcome Rhonda Ramadge as Acting Treasurer, and she will fill this casual vacancy until the AGM. We extend warm thanks to both Lorraine and Rhonda.
We also extend a warm welcome to the following new members: Albert Lewis, Brett Wybrew, Chris Ward, Laura Diaz, Maryanne Souter, Dieter Lepahe and Simon Leonard. Please make them welcome at our club gatherings.

February Minutes
Despite inclement weather, there was a good turn out for the Night Shoot at Bond University. Hopefully you all managed to get some great shots for the Night Scenes competition.
Double change
The meeting place for the February outing to Brisbane on 22 February has been changed. Instead of car pooling, we will be taking the train. Departure times:
There is track work being carried out over that weekend South of Coomera Station. Buses will run from the various stations to get you to Coomera for the 8.10am. Allow more time for the bus links
8.10am from Coomera
Select the departure point most convenient for you. Meet in the last carriage on the train. We will most likely leave the train at South Brisbane. Additional information will be posted on the website.
February Practical Night.
Bring along cameras, instruction books (a must) and possibly a tripod. A general presentation will be given at the beginning of the evening, then members will break into groups so that more experienced photographers can help newer members get to know their cameras better. Q & A will be part of the evening, so have your questions ready and bring a notebook.
Members will be pleased to know that the ramp at KOA has been re-surfaced with a non-slip paint which should make negotiating the ramp safer, especially when it is wet.
The Committee approved the purchase of an external hard drive to back up Society data and important information. It will be kept by the Secretary.
From the next meeting, we will be trialling a new format. It has been noted that a number of members leave immediately after the prints have been displayed. We understand that many people work but it must be disappointing for those who enter digital images, to see people leaving before the presentation of the digital images. Therefore, the digital images will follow straight after the prints and supper will be served at the end of the evening.
A matter of some concern is the sign-on book. For reasons of safety in an emergency, it is essential that everyone present, members and visitors alike, print their name legibly in the sign-on book. Please ensure that you sign the book as soon as you arrive.
For interested members, there is a Thundercats Australia event at the Spit on 15 March. Lots of action shots guaranteed. This is not an organized event. Anyone attending will be asked to sign a disclaimer by the organizers.
The Committee is looking at having a presentation night on using the ColorMunki calibrator. A representative from interstate would give the presentation, which lasts about 2 ½ hours. It would likely be held on a non-club night. Jeff will provide further details at the next meeting.
A couple of other things to think about are the PSQ Convention on the June long weekend. This year it will be held at Caboolture. Further details on the website. Likewise, the website has information on the APSCON convention which this year, is in the lovely seaside town of Victor Harbour, South Australia on 3 – 9 October.

P.S. FROM THE EDITOR...Don’t forget the courses this month, check them out on this website
January Minutes
These summaries will appear in the blog each month as soon after the meeting as time permits. In future months you will be able to access the previous entries by clicking on the Committee category on the right hand sidebar. (DM)
The Committee has spent a lot of time devising the program for the coming year
and we hope you will enjoy the activities we have planned. Some of the meeting
times and locations are yet to be determined, but this is advance notice of what is
coming up and some of the outings and practical nights should tie in with
forthcoming competition set subjects. (It is here)
As there will not be a practical night available before the Brisbane
Urbanscape/Bridges outing, keep in mind the opportunities this trip will offer for
converting colour images to mono. We have a practical night planned for this in
May with the Monochrome competition in October. Architecture lends itself well
to mono, as the shadows and lines can create dramatic images. It is one time
when shooting outside early morning or late afternoon times can be used to
advantage.
On practical nights we have tried to include plenty of hands-on activities with cameras, as
there are many newer members who would like to get to know their cameras
better.
JANUARY PRACTICAL NIGHT (22nd)
This will be a night shoot at Bond University.
Meet at the big arch near the lake at 6.30pm and remember to bring a tripod, cable release if
you have one, mid to wide angle lens, insect repellent and a torch. Lorraine
Jones has very kindly prepared an information sheet which will be a great help
for this shoot. View it here Thank you Lorraine!
BBQ ON JANUARY 25TH (SUNDAY)
Meet at the eastern end of Winders Park (at the BBQs) on Duringan Street Currumbin. The meeting time is 7:30am.
A Hunt & Shoot will commence at 8:00am and finish at 9:30am. Jeff has
prepared a list of clues which will be handed out on the day. The items to be
photographed can be found in the area between the Gold Coast Highway bridge
over Currumbin Creek, and the M1 bridge. After the Hunt & Shoot we will gather
for a BBQ. It should be a lot of fun, so do plan on attending. If you can bring a
salad to share, it would be appreciated. BYO drinks. GCPS will provide the
meat and the bread rolls.
Our Annual Exhibition at Robina will be held from 1–14 July. A working bee
will be held just before 1 July to frame the works to be hung.
The Joint Weekend with Queensland Camera Group and Retro Group has been
set down for the weekend of 9–11 October. We have a location in mind and as
soon as details are finalized we will let members know.
We are greatly in need of an Events Co-ordinator as the Management
Committee already has a heavy work load. If you feel you could take on this job,
(which is not onerous), please see one of the Management Committee at a
meeting or email one of them.
For those members unfamiliar with meeting locations, maps follow.
